The Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas) is a vibrant and engaging marine fish, cherished for its striking golden hue and dynamic personality. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Gulf of Aqaba and the southeast coast of Africa.

Small fish safe: ✅ Yes

Small invert safe: ✅ Yes

Coral safe: ✅ Yes

Minimum tank size: 114 liters (30 gallons)

Adult size: Up to 13 cm (5 inches)

Diet: Omnivorous, with a preference for meaty foods

Be aware of: May exhibit territorial behavior towards similar species; requires ample hiding spots; known to jump, so a secure lid is essential.

Appearance and Coloration

The Midas Blenny boasts a brilliant golden-yellow body, often accompanied by subtle blue accents around the eyes and fins. Notably, individuals from certain regions, such as the African coast, may display a purplish coloration. This species possesses a streamlined body with a blunt head and large, expressive eyes. Its ability to alter coloration slightly in response to mood or environmental factors adds to its charm.

Natural Habitat and Behavior

In their natural environment, Midas Blennies inhabit coral reefs and rocky outcrops, where they find ample crevices and holes for shelter. They are known for their distinctive swimming style, often exhibiting an eel-like motion as they navigate the water column. While generally peaceful, they can become territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similarly shaped species. Providing sufficient space and hiding spots can help mitigate aggressive tendencies.

Tank Requirements and Water Parameters

Minimum Tank Size: A 30-gallon (114 liters) aquarium is recommended to provide adequate space.

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 22°C – 27°C (72°F – 80°F)

pH: 8.1 – 8.4

Specific Gravity: 1.020 – 1.025

Aquascaping: Incorporate ample live rock to create hiding spots and territories. A variety of crevices and caves will provide security and reduce stress.

Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, replicating their natural reef environment.

Water Movement: Moderate to strong flow, mimicking their native habitats with active currents.

Maintaining stable water conditions and a mature tank setup is crucial for their health and longevity.

Diet and Feeding

Unlike many blenny species that are primarily herbivorous, the Midas Blenny is omnivorous with a strong preference for meaty foods:

Natural Diet: In the wild, they consume zooplankton and other small marine organisms.

Captive Diet: Offer a varied diet that includes:

• Mysis shrimp

• Brine shrimp

• Prepared marine omnivore formulations

• Occasional offerings of marine algae or spirulina-based foods

Feeding small amounts multiple times daily can help maintain their energy levels and vibrant coloration.

Compatibility and Social Structure

The Midas Blenny is generally peaceful but may exhibit specific social behaviors:

Territoriality: May show aggression towards other blennies or fish with similar body shapes, especially in confined spaces. It’s advisable to keep only one Midas Blenny per tank unless a mated pair is introduced simultaneously in a sufficiently large aquarium.

Tank Mates: Compatible with a variety of peaceful community fish, such as gobies, clownfish, and wrasses. Avoid housing with large, aggressive species that may intimidate or prey upon them.

Reef Compatibility: Considered reef-safe, they do not typically harm corals or invertebrates.

Important Considerations

Tank Maturity: Best introduced into well-established aquariums that offer stable water parameters and natural microfauna.

Jumping Behavior: Known to leap from open tanks; a secure lid is essential to prevent escape.

Health Monitoring: Regular observation is necessary to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition and to detect any signs of stress or disease early.
